During a weekly poetry prompt in a community, I wrote this piece on the nostalgia of a village slowly emptying as people move to cities. It reflects on how the sense of belonging is changing, and how love and humanity are becoming increasingly commercialized over time.
Though I shaped it in a Ghazal-like Nazm form, its emotions go beyond structure. I hope it takes you back to that place.
खाली थी कुर्सी थी टूटी सी प्याली
गालों पे सिमटी थी झूठी सी लाली
सूखा था पानी उस छिछले कुएं का
फिर भी ढकी थी वो लकड़ी की जाली
पानी सी यादें न ठहरी कि जादू
बारिश समय की है नाराज़ खुशबू
उम्मीदों से क्षत उधड़ती दिवारें
आँगन को छूती थी अंबा की डाली
गालों पे सिमटी थी झूठी सी लाली
बिचते मकानात तन्हा जुबां थे
पुरखों की आँखों में रौशन सबाँ थे
हाथों के छापे थे उन ही मकाँ पे
जिनसे किसी ने न उम्मीद पाली
गालों पे सिमटी थी झूठी सी लाली
आया ना कोई पुकारा बहुत था
ना जानकारी ना जाना बहुत था
यूं तो भरी सारी खाने की थाली
मिर्ची की फाँकी किसी ने न डाली
गालों पे सिमटी थी झूठी सी लाली
टूटी दुकानें तो पक्की हुई थीं
कमजोर नज़रे भी शक्की हुईं थी
आए न जाए भले कोई भी अपना
रखते थे बाजू की गद्दी को खाली
गालों पे सिमटी थी झूठी सी लाली
कुछ तो लगे थे धरोहर बचाने
दो चार दीपों की दीवाली गाने
कब तक ही चलते यूँ खाली सड़क पर
सूनी थी गलियाँ न ‘ईदी क़वाली
गालों पे सिमटी थी झूठी सी लाली
यादें जटाएं थीं पीपल सी फैली
लिपटी धरा से पुरानी सहेली
लेकर बगीचे की सूखी सी धूली
‘आज़ी’ ने तस्वीर कौने सजा ली
फिर भी थी गालों पे झूठी सी लाली
