Yesterday, inspired by a friend’s request and the melancholic weather, I attempted to capture the emotions of a young boy whose heart aches from unrequited love. The sting of love’s rejection isn’t always about betrayal, but sometimes about the quiet sacrifice of unspoken feelings.
Some important words borrowed from many different languages to express the feeling of the wedding day when the bride wish and request her past love to disappear from her current life.
- तिरकना (तिड़कना): “cracking” or “scaling” of henna on the skin.
- याद-ए-माज़ी : memory of past
- रोज़-ए-अरूसी: wedding day
- निगारिश: writing
- दर्द-ए-हिज्राँ: Separation
- वस्ल: The spiritual/physical union of lovers.
- तिश्नगी: Thirst (Persian)

जुदा होना तो तय था तमन्ना-ए-वस्ल से ही
जा हथेली पे टपका, मैं ख़ारिज होकर
हिना का तिरकना, मेरे अश्कों की तिश्नगी
रचा गहरा, जो मिला गुज़ारिश होकर
याद-ए-माज़ी में बस कहीं खाक हो जाऊँ
रोज़-ए-अरूसी पे बरसूँ, निगारिश होकर

My heart drank the ache of separation so deep,
from a silent corner I fell — as rain.
Our parting was sealed the moment we longed for union;
upon her palm I descend — in vain.
The henna lay cracked, athirst for the salt of my tears;
yet it darkened when touched by her plea.
Let me turn to dust in the corridors of her past,
and fall on her wedding day — silently.
